The last two days have been bittersweet for me. Trip and Mady have had their first days of school. Trip's first day was Monday. I was worried about so many different things for him, but God really protected our time and his, sweet little heart. First, to try and make things go smoothly in the morning, I got him up earlier than necessary, so he and I could slowly get him ready for school, without having to rush him out the door...and it worked! He was sleepy, but once he started perking up, getting fed, dressed and out the door went really well. He didn't even complain about having to go potty. I think this might be a first for a school morning. We laid down a few new rules for the school year: no tv in the morning on school mornings, and healthy breakfasts on school mornings, aka no more poptarts. Luckily, TJ made some delicious banana bread muffins on Sunday, so the kids have been chowing on those the last few mornings. So, we all got out the door with plenty of time for pictures too. When we got to school, I decided to go through the carpool line because I was a little afraid that Trip might have some separation anxiety. But, I was the one that suffered from that, not him. He got right off the golf cart and went into school without even a kiss or a hug goodbye. If I hadn't had sweet Mady next to me, I might have started crying. Trip had a great day. He is such a boy though, when I asked him what he did, I got the typical answer, "I don't remember." He also couldn't remember any of his new friends' names, so I challenged him for the next day to learn at least one new name. If he did, he'd get a piece of gum for the ride home!
So, today was day two of school for Trip, and day one for Mady. Even though she did Mother's Morning Out for a few months last year, this is really her first day of school (in my mind). This time Trip surprised me and was up by 7:30 all by himself. We got out the door with plenty of time for pictures again this morning. We had to walk in this morning because Mady can't do carpool until September. I thought this might be a problem for Trip, but again, he started walking right into his room without a kiss and hug. So, this time I stopped him and got my sugar. I have to take advantage of this for as long as I can. Pretty soon, I won't be able to get a kiss and hug, not matter how much I beg. :-) Mady, as expected, walked right into her class and started playing. In fact, she had no idea I was still there when I found her for a quick kiss and hug. I told her I'd be back in a bit to pick her up and her response was, "Where did the baby doll go?" Obviously, she was quite concerned I was leaving her. When I came back to get her, a few mommies had already arrived, so every child in her class was watching the door, crying for their mommy...except Mady. She was still playing with the baby dolls, completely unaware of my presence. But, she did at least give me a huge smile and hug when she saw me. And Trip, won his piece of gum, plus one. He remembered the name of two kids in his class. The best part is he told me that one of the boys has a really good imagination and his has fun playing with him. I found that totally humorous, because I've yet to meet any child with an imagination like Trip's. I can't even begin to fathom of the kinds of fun those two will have this year! While, I am so glad that they are both enjoying school each had a good first day, I have to admit that a little part of me wishes they missed me as much as I missed them. I know people always say this, but it really does go by so fast. Next year, Trip will be in kindergarten. I will need a huge box of tissues on that first day, I'm sure!
