Why is it that we tend to save all of our thankfulness for one month out of the year? Or...is that just me?! I guess it's not so much that I save it, but more that it's not top of my mind most of the year like it is in November as we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas.
As you may or may not know, I help to lead a support group for adoptive and foster moms. And, as is the case with many activities that will be taking place this month, our theme for our November meeting was Thankfulness. Surprise! Surprise! As I was planning our November meeting, I found a blog written by another adoptive mom that spoke about being thankful when you don't feel very thankful. It specifically talked about one of my favorite verses in the Bible, 2 Corinthians 12:9, which teaches that God's power "is made perfect in weakness." That our abilities are not based on what we can do, but our strength and ability comes from the One who can do ALL things. Reading through this post led me to search for ways in my own family to find ways to be thankful even if we might not be feeling thankful. So, as part of that I've decided to make "thankful" jars for each family member. We've spent the entire year talking about our role as a family is to build each other up. And, what better way to do that, then to fill a jar with reminders of the things that I am most thankful about for each member of the family... So, being the multi-tasker that I am...I'm going to use this month's blog post to start my thankful list. :-) While, I could easily go on and on about each of them, I'll try to keep the lists fairly short, for now.
I AM THANKFUL FOR...
TJ-his playfulness with our kids, his positive outlook on life, his ability to just let stress roll of his back, his love of football, his amazing abilities in the kitchen, his wacky sense of humor, his ability to find the good in every person, his authenticity, his foot rubs...
Trip-his kind heart, his loyal friendships, his silliness, his love for his family, his ability to read and comprehend a ginormous book, the way he laughs, his sarcasm, his innocence, the way he looks out for his sister and brother, the way he loves to learn, his hugs...
Mady-her genuine love and concern for all those she cares for, her desire to do things the right way, her love of dance and tumbling, her never give up attitude, her flexibility in new situations, her desire to help others, the way she giggles (especially at Trip), her snuggles...
Eli-his survival instincts, how he loves to make us laugh, his desire to learn and to excel, his independent spirit, how he looks up to Trip, his sweet friendship with Brooks, the way he talks-a little bit Chinese with a lot of English, aka Chinglish, his bravery, his awesome dance moves...
I am writing this on the night of the election. Tomorrow many people are not going to be thankful for the new president of the United States. No matter who is in charge of the country, my heavenly Father sits on the throne and he is in control...and I am BEYOND THANKFUL for that!
