A time for boys to be boys and girls to be girls

TJ and I both agree that while it is very important to have time together as a family, it is equally important to have "boy time" and "girl time." So, this past weekend, we had a little of both. Most of the last week had been yucky, rainy and cold. In fact, we had freezing rain and sleet an hour before Trip's soccer practice on Friday. I was really hoping (since they are only 4!) that practice would be cancelled, but I guess the coach didn't want to since it was their last practice. So, on Saturday morning, we went to Trip's last soccer game all bundled up like we were going to a Packers game! Each child (and myself) had on at least three layers on top and bottom. And, I made a huge mug of hot chocolate to share. The cold didn't seem to bother Trip and his teammates. They had a great game. And, Mady enjoyed sipping the hot chocolate with me on the sidelines. After the game, they had a little trophy ceremony and party at a near-by Chick-fil-a. There were two other teams doing the same thing, so it was chaos, but the kids had a blast. The best part was this adorable, and delicious, tear-apart cupcake cake in the shape of a soccer ball! After everyone took naps, we took the kids out to eat at our favorite Mexican restaurant. I am pretty confident that Mady could eat an entire bowl of cheese dip all by herself if we let her! But, since we all love it so much, she only gets about half. :-) After dinner we took the kids to their version of heaven on earth...Toys R Us! We did this for two reasons: One was to get an idea of what the kids might like for Christmas (and Trip's birthday) and also to help some less fortunate than us. The kids are participating in a program called Operation Christmas Child through their Sunday School classes. You fill a large shoe box with gifts for a child in need somewhere in the world. So, Trip is filling his box with something for a boy age 2-4 and Mady is doing the same, but for a girl. They were so cute! They did a great job picking out things for "My boy or My girl" as they called them. Then, it was time for them to play around and show us things they might want for Christmas. This was totally overwhelming for me! Trip pretty much would like one of everything in the store. Mady, on the other hand, found the baby doll aisle and never left it. When we finally convinced her to move on, she insisted that this stuffed animal was crying and needed her to carry it, so the animal came with us through the store. It did not make it home with us though. :-)

The next morning, we all got up nice and early, thanks to the time change and made it to church. Then, after church, TJ took Trip off for their boy time. They went to The Great Train Expo. I'm not sure who had more fun, because neither one of them would stop talking about it when they got home. For our girl time, Mady and I went swimming at a local indoor pool and then stopped at Starbucks for a warm treat! It was so nice to have some one-on-one time with each child. And, I think they both loved the special attention.

This week is sort of our calm before the storm. We'll be leaving for Wisconsin for Thanksgiving in about a week and a half. So, next week, we'll be getting ready and celebrating Thanksgiving at school with the kids. It should be a busy week, with a lot to look forward to! And, now it is time for mommy to be mommy and take a nap while the kids are.
