Totally Embarrassed

This weekend, Trip managed to embarrass me more than he has ever before. While I am sure this is not the last time or the worst I will ever be embarrassed by he or Mady, it was still awful. The saddest thing about it all was that we were all having such a good time and it all had to come to a halt because of a 4 year old. TJ and I took the kids to the Children's Museum in Atlanta. They have a Curious George exhibit there right now. The kids and I have been to see the exhibit before, but TJ hadn't and on the weekends, they have someone dress up as George, so I thought it would be fun to go back and actually see George. Getting a membership to this place for my birthday present has been the greatest gift ever! There is so much to do there and Mady and Trip love it. We'd been at the museum for almost two hours and our time their was nearing an end. Trip wanted to go play in the water-play area for a little while. So, he and Mady (for the second time), put on the raincoats the museum provides and started fishing. Trip is actually pretty good at using the pole to pick up the magnetic fish floating around. I decided to sit down for a minute on the benches behind the water pool. Every time Trip caught a fish, he would swing around and show me the fish on the pole. Unfortunately, as he was swinging around to show me the 3rd or 4th fish he'd caught, some sweet kid just happened to be walking by at the worst moment and Trip whacked him in the head with his pole, completely on accident. I jumped off the bench and went over to make sure the child was alright and to make sure that Trip apologized. Well, much to my surprise, Trip refused to apologize and I still don't really understand why. So, after about 3 minutes of this poor kid (who, by the way, was wearing some sort of eye patch on one eye, which made this whole thing even worse) standing by Trip, waiting for Trip to apologize, I told Trip we were going to leave unless he said he was sorry. Trip, seemingly embarrassed by the whole thing, told me he didn't want to. So, I told the child and his mother I was sorry and that we were leaving. I was mortified! Why wouldn't Trip just say he was sorry? It was a complete accident. All he had to do was mumble one little word and we could go on with the fun. He later told me that he didn't want people to see him say he was sorry, so all I can think is that he just felt embarrassed because people were looking at him and he doesn't like attention...good or bad. So, I put him in time out while we let Mady play a little longer. As Trip was crying on a bench, other parents kept looking at him concerned and finally one man came up and asked him if he was ok. I know he thought Trip was lost or something, so I explained that Trip was just in time out...more embarrassment. Then, as we were coming to get Mady down from this tree house she was playing in, she got scared for some reason and started crying. So, we left the museum with both children in tears. FUN!
Sunday was a much more relaxing and fun day. We went to church in the morning and the children and a birthday party for Jesus. Then, we took the kids to the nursery during church. When we came back to get them, the ladies working in the nursery were telling TJ how great they both were. Here was how the described our children, so perfectly, "Trip just wants us to read to him the whole time, and Mady didn't stop eating." That's our kids! After naps, we got to go up and meet our nephew, Nolan. He is so precious. You forget how little and innocent they are. Mady still seems like such a baby to TJ and I, but when you see and hold a newborn, you realize how fast she and Trip are growing up. Our babies, of all ages, no matter how embarrassing they can be, are wonderful gifts from God!
