The two bribes

I knew we were in for a long day, both Thursday and Friday, when Trip started the day in tears both days. Thursday he started crying after I woke him up, excitedly reminding him that it was the day of his school Christmas party. Not the reaction I expected. The reason for the reaction? School Christmas party=School Christmas program(aka singing in front of large group of gawking parents). Uh-oh! Somehow TJ and I managed to get his mind off the program to get him dressed, fed and almost out the door. But, then the waterfall of tears began again as he remembered where we were headed. So, I spent the entire car ride to school explaining to Trip that all the other parents were just there to watch their own children, not him and that we were the only ones that would be watching him. I told him a story about being scared before a dance recital when I was little. And, then I promised him I would take him to get a treat, anything he wanted, as long as he stood where the teachers told him and did what they asked. It worked! He stayed up there the whole time, and we even got some smiles, waves and saw a few words of some songs sung! I was so happy! And, Trip's teachers were so proud of him. I had warned them of his apprehension, so they were completely prepared for him to go running off the stage screaming. Their class was dressed as little angels and he looked so cute. He spent half of the performance playing with the sparkly tinsel around his sleeve. After the program, TJ, Mady and I joined Trip and his classmates for a Christmas party. The best part were these cute snowman pretzel treats my friend Amy made. Yummy! Trip decided for his treat he wanted to go to "Old McDonald's and get a donut." I know, you're thinking, I didn't know McDonald's had donuts. Well, they don't, but the bakery at Walmart does, and McDonalds is inside Walmart, thus the connection. Now, the fun of this day is only half way done. On our way home from the Christmas program, I had a message from Katie. She and Graham were on the way to the hospital...baby Nolan decided to come a little early. Yeah! I like him already. We decided to stay home and go see Nolan the following day. We went on to celebrate our friends' son's first birthday, Parker. They had a little party with cake and hot chocolate; it was perfect! What a nice way to end a crazy day...sweet treats and sweet news!

Now, begin day two of tears. This morning Trip wakes up and remembers that he has a doctor's appointment and he is not happy about it. Ever since I took he and Mady to get their flu shots, Trip equates the doctor with being stuck with a needle. It is his just his 4 year old check up. He and I are both a little nervous because we aren't sure what to expect. Well, we had every right to be nervous. 4 is not a lucky number. When you turn 4, you get 4 booster shots! That's right...4!!!! Now, bribe number 2 comes into play. I promised Trip that not only would he get the typical popsicle the nurses at the doctor's office give after each visit; I will also follow the doctor visit up with a visit to Chick-fil-a for a milk shake of his choice. While excited about the prospect of a milk shake, Trip is still very apprehensive about the doctor. He did great to begin with, handling the height and weight check just fine, as well as the temperature check and blood pressure check. Next comes the blood check...just a little prick, but with Trip, you would've thought we were sawing off his arm. This was the first clue to the nurses that the upcoming booster shots would require back up. The tears continued to flow as they told him he got to pee in a cup. I wanted to cry with him. But, we made it through that and calmed down for most of the rest of the appointment. Then, in walk two nurses, the first had called for back up after the freak out over the little prick. It was time for the shots. Trip screamed and kicked like a crazy person. But, somehow the sweet nurse got in all 4 shots...and Trip got his popsicle and chocolate milk shake. Mission accomplished. Thank goodness for sugar and bribery.
Now, it was my turn to cry. The weather here was so yucky today, that TJ and I decided it was best to stay home and go meet our nephew, baby Nolan, later this weekend. Bummer, but at least I didn't have to get shots too.
